Vicopisano and the secret parish churches
Vicopisano’s origins probably date back to the Etruscan times but the life in the village started in the 10th Century. It was born in the place where the two rivers, Arno and Auser, met: they were important for the economy and the communication of the two main cities in the nearby area: Pisa and Lucca. The Vicopisano’s parish church has been constructed with the stone coming from the Verruca mountain at her shoulder: verrucano rosa. Inside the church a sculptural group in wood : it represent the Deposition and dates back to the 12th Century as the remains of the frescos on the wall.
We will walk through the narrow streets, kind of tower houses’ labyrinth, then reach the praetorian palace and the fortress commissioned to Brunelleschi in the 15th Century.
Vicopisano is a village that takes care of his past and recalls it in occasion of the Medieval feast, every august.
