Project Description

San Miniato

Activity

It is called ‘the city of the XX miles’ and will reveal its hidden treasures between the red of its stones and the traditional products. From the top of the Rocca Federiciana to the heart of the village, to the underground roads such as the via Angelica. San Miniato shows us how a small town used to be a big and powerful city, revealing Medieval alleyways and Renaissance buildings like Palazzo Grifoni. The churches still keep the original medieval splendour with Baroque touches. In the 17th Century Piazza Del Seminario you will smell truffle, especially in November during the White Truffle Feast. San Miniato is a crossroads of styles and flavours: Pisan and Florentine art, sweet and fruity wines, the silence of its hills, the vibrant theatre events…

The visit can be combined with wine or traditional product tasting (truffle, salami, cold cuts…).

Heritage site

  • Tower Federiciana: from the top of its 40 metres you can enjoy the view on the Arno Valley and see all the way up to Pisa and Florence, as it is located exactly in the middle between the two cities. It was built for Frederick II of Svevia.
  • Diocesan Art Museum: A collection of religious art from the Middle-Ages. Do not miss the coat of arms of the Euteleti.
  • Oratorio del Loeretino and Palazzo Comunale: the old chapel houses a tabernacle decorated by Francesco Lanfranchi, Andrea del Sarto’s brother and a copy of the famous black Madonna of Loreto. The Town Hall is the set of the local administration and the Council Hall can be visited as it houses frescoes from the Middle Ages and 20th Century.
  • Archeological Museum: a collection of archeological remains that tell us the story of the city starting from the Etruscan times.
  • The Euteleti Academy: a science and literature institution where you can also find a funeral mask of Napoleone Buonaparte (as part of his family was from San Miniato).
  • Conservatory of Santa Chiara: a valuable art collection, including works by Lorenzo Cardi known as ‘Cigoli’, Galileo Galilei’s friend and confident.
  • Via Angelica: a vaulted staircase that used to connect the village to the countryside. Citizens, travelers, and pilgrims could stop to pray in the chapels that gradually appear. This is something unique in the Tuscan territory.
  • Arciconfraternita Della Misericordia: a symbol of the Tuscan volunteering, it has set an example for the world. It displays a 13th-Century wooden deposition: one of the few still preserved in our territory.
